Outfit of the Week: Claret and Bird Prints

February 12, 2015 No Comments
outfit of the day

outfit of the day

Following on from Saturday’s blog post about getting out of the old comfort zone, and into Outfit of the Day posts, or rather Outfit of the Week posts here’s the first one! Though I’m guessing you guys probably guessed that from the title. This post was surprisingly quite fun to do, despite all of my earlier reservations.

Now, I’m not entirely sure how these posts go – I tend to just skip the text and look at the pretty photos and then scan for any possible shopping links. So let’s just go from top to toes, which seems logical to me.

outfit of the day

The hat is a fabulous felt creation from Banana Republic. It must be a good few years old, but it’s such a classic style you can dust it off every winter or autumn and still feel pretty darn good about wearing it. My lovely photographer for the day was kind enough to get a close up of the bow (does this thing count as a bow?) because I think it just gives the hat a little bit more.

The shirt I got a few months back from a Dorothy Perkins sale, but they are still selling pretty similar ones now. The only real difference is that it has short sleeves and all of the birds are grey; whereas mine are both grey and blue.

The skirt is a primarni steal… I haven’t been back to Primark so I’m not sure if it’s still on sale however if you have a look at the links below I’ve found one that is incredibly similar. Like the only real difference is a couple of inches on the waistband. I knew this skirt was short, but looking at it in these photos has made me go ‘ohhh’. So yeah, sorry to anyone I’ve flashed wearing this to work in the past.

The boots hail back to my days working for Pavers. They are incredibly comfy. Again these aren’t brand new but you can get the updated version or a leather version (the photos don’t really show it but these are quite a good faux suede.) Just a warning though, in my opinion the leather version, with the wedge hidden looks a little bit more ‘mature’

This bag was a gift from by boyfriend, and I feel the mixture of claret and purple in such a classic shape make it a wardrobe must-have. It is perfect for Autumn/Winter and you can fit enough in it that you don’t have to have the dreaded cotton tote in tow.

Braving Outfit of The Day Posts

February 7, 2015 4 Comments

outfit of the day intro blog

For a while now, I’ve been playing with the idea of jumping on the Outfit Of The Day bandwagon. Most bloggers seem to be doing it in one form or another, and I love seeing how different people put outfits together differently. Besides, they look quite fun. I mean, if we’re being totally honest… who wouldn’t want to act like a faux celebrity on a photoshoot for a little while. Secretly, it all looks quite glamourous and fashion darrrling-esque.

There have been a few things putting me off Outfit of the Day’s however, most of which probably stem from self-confidence issues. Firstly, at a UK size 10 I feel a bit too fat to be doing this – a size 10 apparently qualifies as plus size in the modelling world. Gulp. I’m short, with a few extra pounds, so not your conventional clothes horse.

Another reason is that I think that I’d feel like a bit of a prat. I’m fine with people taking my photo spontaneously, however having to pose, possibly numerous times, always makes me feel uncomfortable. The area in which I live is not the sort of place where you regularly see photoshoots. Most people shuffle about in either jeans or tracksuits, so having to go ‘on location’ glammed up and posing seems a bit daunting. It will undoubtedly gather some strange looks, which probably won’t help me feel like less of a fool.

Doing an Outfit of the Day post will also require roping another person into the mix. I don’t have a fancy tripod or remote camera that would enable me to take full length photos of myself. And to be totally honest, in many of the local places around here, even if I did have a remote camera I probably wouldn’t want to get to far away from it; just in case it disappeared into the pocket of a passer-by. However after moaning on and on about it, and receiving quite a few eye-rolls, I’ve decided to just go for it. My sister has kindly offered to be the acting photographer this weekend, so we should have some images and a blog ready for posting on Thursday. And now I’ve written Thursday; I feel like I’ve actually got to stick to it now.

I’ve decided to try it out, mainly just to push me out of my comfort zone. Although I believe that people should try to do new, scary things as often as possible, I probably don’t do them enough. Besides, what’s the worst that could happen? I could gain some confused looks from strangers and look massive on the photos. The blog could easily be deleted and as for the looks, they can be forgotten fairly easily. (I hope.)

Rather than doing one Outfit of The Day, I’m going to aim for an Outfit of the Week, because

  1. Its Freezing
  2. All of my possible photographers work full time

Plus, it means I don’t have an excuse to go shopping every week. Hello, savings.

So there you have it, soon you’ll be able to see me posing about, looking awkward and pretending to be a fashionista. You lucky, lucky people.

Nail Art How To: Valentine’s Day Negative Space Manicure

Negative Nail Art How To Valentine's Day
valentine's nail art how to negative space hearts

OK, this photo is actually from a wedding we attended a few years back… but still!

So, it is almost Valentine’s Day. Now me and the boyfriend don’t really celebrate it other than going out for a meal. I tend to find all the romantic items that get shoved down our throats a bit sickly. One thing that I do love about Valentine’s Day however, is the chance to get creative with manicures and nail art.

So baring Valentine’s day in mind, I decided to experiment with negative space nail art. Negative space nail art is set to be the big thing for manicures this year, even though it looks like a bit of a faff to do. No pain, no gain, eh?

For this look I used Collection 2000’s Lasting Colour in Damson Jam. Which is possibly older than my niece, so there’s that. Despite being old it still goes on a dream, offering quick and equal coverage. I like this polish mainly for its colour; a lovely deep red. It kinda hints at being vampy without being full on femme fatale.

I painted 3 nails, leaving bare the nails on the thumb and ring finger. On the bare nails, I then used a dotting tool to draw the outline of a heart.

I thing painted the rest of the nail, using the dotting tool when I needed to paint close to the outline. As you can see on the photos, the heart on the ring finger went a bit wobbly however unless you’re looking (or taking blog photos) I think I can get away with it.

And there you go, that’s basically it.

I was toying with doing the outline of the hearts in gold, but then big brother happened.
