3 Ways To Boost Your Sales Using Loss Aversion (AKA FOMO)

Whilst I’m big on the power of mindset, sometimes you need more than a hunch.

So luckily, back in 1992, Eldad Yechiam carried out a study, which showed we value losses 2.3 times more than gains of the same value.

Basically, losses hurt us wayyyy more than wins make us feel good.

So how can we, as marketers, leverage that knowledge to boost sales?

By looking at other businesses that are doing just that, and implementing similar ideas in our own businesses… obviously!

Get Specific

If you’ve ever tried to cancel Amazon Prime, you would have come face-to-face with a great example of loss aversion copywriting.

By changing from a generic message to a personalised calculation of what you’ve saved so far, it makes you scared of no longer saving it in the future.

It quietly implies, that if you cancel Prime you could easily lose a lot more money than the small cost of your Prime subscription. Which in turn leads to a higher customer retention rate for Amazon.

Savings First

Amazon also uses loss aversion psychology in their online shopping listings.

If you ever search for a book, for example, you’ll often see a listing like this – and chances are your eyes will automatically be drawn not to the price, like in conventional shops, but rather to the larger, red saving you could make.

On an unconscious level, most people will then want to buy the item, whilst it’s on sale instead of waiting and possibly ‘losing money’ when the item is no longer discounted and it’s back to its original price.

Another tactic you could consider is one used by some e-commerce sites.

Its easy to add an element of urgency, by using a countdown timer to ensure customers act fast (e.g without having time to reconsider or talk themselves out of it)

It gives the sense that if you don’t act now, you will likely lose out – loss aversion marketing at its simplest

Consider Cashless

If you have a physical premises, it’s worth trying to steer customers away from using cold hard cash, by promoting alternative methods such as cards or apple pay.

This is because handing over cash heightens our sense of loss in a way tapping a card doesn’t.

In fact, cash heightens our feelings of loss so much that a 2201 study found that shoppers spend up to 100% more when using cards instead of cash.

I mention this one because its important to remember, marketing extends way beyond the sexy digital side of it – and every interaction a customer has with your brand, whether online, over the phone or in person counts.

Plus, a sale’s a sale at the end of the day isn’t it?

You’ll never Use Clickbait Again, After Reading This One Strange Fact!

It’s hard to imagine an online world without clickbait headlines, but we may soon have to.

While it’s hard to establish when exactly clickbait headlines began, the term itself was first popularised in 2006 giving the sensational, emotive and often humorous style of writing an official title. 

This style of writing then gained momentum, due to sites such as Buzzfeed – and with good reason. For a while, these types of headlines were good at driving website traffic and encouraged social sharing. 

However, it seems the general public has begun to tire of the ‘over promise, under deliver’ nature of these headlines. 

Research carried out by Penn State’s Media Effects Laboratory and Institute of Computational and Data Sciences has found that Clickbait headlines (defined as relying on ‘linguistic gimmicks’ such as superlatives and curiosity gaps) are not any more effective in driving website traffic than traditional headlines. 

In fact, it found that the Clickbait headlines actually performed worse on occasion. 

The researchers carried out two studies, and each time they presented a group of 150-250 subjects one of eight headlines, featuring both Clickbait style writing and more traditional headlines. 

The headlines presented to the subjects were classed as Clickbait if they included the following traits: 

  • Lists
  • Positive Superlatives (eg Best, Greatest)
  • Negative Superlatives (eg Worst, Least)
  • Modals (eg Could, Should)
  • Demonstrative adjectives (eg This, That)
  • ‘Wh’ Words (eg What, When, Who)

They then monitored to see if the subjects would follow through and read the article or share it on social media. 

The study concluded that Clickbait headlines “did not dramatically outperform” headlines written in the traditional style. Whilst they could only speculate on the reason, they suggested that because are so common these days, they no longer stand out as intriguing. 

Interestingly, for the first study, the researchers used AI to identify which headlines were traditional and which were clickbait headlines. This AI was similar to the type used by social media platforms. 

They found that the AI systems frequently disagreed on what was classed as a Clickbait headline – in fact, they only agreed 47% of the time

This may not seem a huge deal if you’re not planning to research Clickbait with AI, however, it does pose a problem for social media platforms that are trying to clamp down on the spread of misinformation & fake news.

It is widely believed that due to its exaggerated nature, and social sharing potential that Clickbait headlines can help misinformation spread – especially as the topics tend to be trending and easily skimmable.

Therefore, many a social media platform has assumed that by reducing the reach of these articles that are shared, the less misinformation will circulate on their platform. 

As such, they were relying on AI to scan content and accurately determine which content was trustworthy and which were clickbait. If the AI struggles to do so, it could see some Clickbait titles slip through the net and feature on more people’s newsfeeds. 

It also opens the door for Clickbait to evolve. If, for example, Clickbait writers notice that their stories get more reach when including questions rather than lists it is only logical that the number of Clickbait headlines including lists will reduce, whilst the number including questions will increase. 

In turn, this will mean that the AI itself has to evolve to match, eventually leading to a cat and mouse style contest. 

So what does this all mean for us?

Well two things, firstly if Clickbait headlines aren’t your style you don’t need to worry. Writing in a traditional style won’t hinder your website’s traffic & may even improve it.

It also means that websites that intend to spread misinformation, may have to evolve constantly, to keep ahead of the AI trying to stop them. This may make Clickbait headlines harder for users to identify, making it even hard for digital novices to identify a trusty source

How To Use Emojis To Grow Your Business

Emoji use in a professional setting seems to be continuously up for debate.

Some think they are harmless fun, others think that they are unprofessional and childish. But whatever your personal thoughts, it may be time to incorporate them into your marketing.

Or your social media marketing at least.

Research into emojis (yep, people research these things!) found that they can boost your engagement rate on social media.

How To Boost Your Engagement Rates Using Emojis

If we’re going to start with the obvious, using emojis is a simple but effective way to help your text grab attention by sprinkling it with a bit of colour.

But more importantly, emojis affect us in a subconscious way, which in turn helps us to feel more connected to the person, or brand that posted them.

Whilst words are important when we communicate with another human 93% of the ‘language’ we pick up on is nonverbal. This comes to us through ways such as facial expressions, tone of voice & gestures.

And now, research shows that when we see a facial emoji on-screen our brain identifies the face and reacts the same way as it does to an actual human face.

In essence, emojis trigger an ’emotional cognition’ in our brains, which in turn makes us feel seen by the person/brand and thus more connected to them.

By helping customers feel connected to your brand, they are more likely to support you through engaging with your content.

As you post regularly and build on that initial connection, this will also help to build trust in your brand, which over time will encourage conversions.

The use of faces has long been studied in relation to marketing and has been proven that including a photo of a face (preferably your own!) on a landing page can increase conversions by a huge 95%

Given how our brains react to emojis, there is no reason why they too couldn’t help with your conversions. However, it must be noted that context will play a part in this – with emojis being seen as more appropriate on social media than on websites.

How To Choose The Right Emoji’s For Your Social Media Marketing

Not all emojis have the same effect. Our brains only begin an emotional cognition when presented with an emoji that replicates a human face.

However, other emojis can be useful for transmitting the tone of voice and communicating your brand’s personality.

For example, if your brand has a cheeky style and targets millennials using the peach emoji as a byword for ‘bum’ will help humanise your brand. It will show the millennials reading that you don’t take things too seriously, that you are similar to them, and so are likely to be of interest to them.

If however, you work in corporate finance, for example, a peach emoji would seem totally irrelevant if not a bit crass.

When choosing your emojis, always remember that context is key.

They have to be relevant to the point you are making.

They have to fit with the style of your brand/your brand voice.

They have to be universally understood. If you use emojis to convey full sentences or key points, you risk them being lost on the audience as interpretations vary.

What The Data Says

Instagram – Social media analytics provider Quintly believes that Instagram posts that contain emojis see between 15-48% more engagement.

Twitter – Online advertising agent Wordstream conducted a study that showed tweets with emojis had a 25% increase in engagement rates compared to those tweets without emojis.

Facebook – Social media management tool Sprout, experimented with paid advertising on Facebook. They ran adverts with and without emojis in them and found ads containing emojis accounted for 84% of the clicks overall. This also meant that they had a 400% lower cost per click than the ads without emojis.
